Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT) is the property of a system that safeguards the network from attack, even if some validators are acting maliciously.
In a BFT system, all of the validators of a network must agree, or reach a consensus about the current state of the blockchain. A network must have at least β of honest and reliable validators to be considered a usable network. If more than half of the validators (51% attack) of the network act maliciously, this can create problems surrounding the manipulation and exploitation of the network.
